Happy Hour - Relax and Enjoy: Picture This

If you have ever had the opportunity to make a quilt from a pattern created by Terry Atkinson, you know what a joy it is to work with her patterns. I’d decided a few months ago to take a class at my LQS which featured the Happy Hour: Relax and Enjoy quilt booklet, and the Picture This quilt in particular.

The quilt pictured on the cover is the quilt I will be making. I, too, chose batiks, but I chose tans, browns and reds. It will match the great room in my house. However, I think I will be adding a narrow inner border and a wide outer border; I like the look of the two borders in a quilt.

On Friday, May 1, I took this class. For all of the sewing and quilting I’ve done, it was the first time I’d ever taken a quilting class, and it was all that I’d anticipated that it would be. Granted, I did not learn anything new, and I moved quickly enough to complete all of my blocks by the end of the day, but I greatly enjoyed the experience. I will definitely do it again.

As of today, I have ironed all 30 blocks, and I am partway through the process of trimming them down to a uniform size. I’ll keep you posted. :)

For the love of quilting

Recently, I was asked for a sewing machine contest by YCQT to share why I love quilting. So, I stopped to really think about it.

I thought about how it gives me a diversion from all of the crazyness that life has to offer at times. If you quilt or sew, or really do any type of crafting, you can relate; just by planting myself in front of the sewing machine, or by handling fabric, I can feel the tension begin to melt away. There is something tranquil, almost therapeutic in the cutting and arranging of fabric, or in the soft whirring of the sewing machine.

I thought about how, while quilting is something I do in solitude, I can also do it with others. Sometimes my daughters quilt and sew with me.

I thought about how sometimes I quilt and sew with my sewing circle (our group is mentioned in previous posts on this blog) in our quest to provide quilts and other sewn items for those in need in our area. We have sewn for families of deceased infants, abandoned babies, the elderly, the homeless, families living in shelters–the list goes on and on. We do not have outside financial backing, and many of us are not much better off than those for whom we sew; our fabric comes to us through donations. (If you have any fabric you’d like to donate, by the way, let me know; we’d be ever so grateful.)

I thought about how it would be great to work with a brand new machine. New machines often sew faster, and, for the most part, do not need frequent repairs, so you can sew more in the same amount of time. But whether our machines are new, fairly new, vintage, or otherwise, we will continue with our mission. Even with older, vintage machines (from the 60s, quite often), we do all that we can for the babies, children, women and men of our community.

Go to YCQT’s website here and share your own story–and enter the contest, too!

Pictures of my quilts

I finally did it; I posted pictures of all of my quilts!

yellow_brick_road_b

This is my Yellow Brick Road quilt, with the fabulous Mary Engelbreit cherry fabrics!

This is my Take 5 quilt, which highlights a beautiful Alexander Henry novelty fabric

Here are all of My Quilts

Because I do a lot of charity sewing, very few of the many quilts that I have sewn remain in my personal collection. One day I may remedy that, but with so many people in need, it makes more sense to me sew for others’ needs versus my own wants.

Enjoy!

Cotton quilting fabric is here!

cotton_quilting_fabric

Admittedly, fabrics at chain stores are often more affordably priced than what you will find at your local quilt shop (but not here!). Yet LQS fabrics are of a MUCH better quality, even when compared to similar all-cotton chain store fabrics. This higher quality means that you will have a quilt that wears better and lasts longer, and can become an heirloom quilt, passed down from generation to generation. It is definitely worth it.

These 100% cotton fabrics are high-end, quilt shop quality, and would work beautifully in your next quilting project:

P & B gingham fabric - green

P & B gingham fabric - yellow
P & B gingham fabric - pink
Timeless Treasures Tea Party Novelty Fabric - pink
Henry Glass floral fabric - pink
Classic Cottons heart fabric - pink
P & B sunflower fabric - red/orange
P & B sunflower fabric - blue

Decorator fabric - for tote bags!

Isn’t this just the most fun fabric!

decorator_fabric_dots_black

It is along the lines of a decorator fabric - nice and heavy, feels like canvas, often described as a bottomweight or twill fabric, and GREAT for tote bags! Interestingly enough, I have used fabric of this weight more than once to make a wholecloth quilt for charity–these quilts are great for nursing home residents. Wholecloth quilts are wonderfully warm, and very durable.

So, what will you make with this fabric?

Classic toile will never go out of style

Few fabrics as a whole category are more beautiful, classic, and timeless than toile fabrics.

toile_fabric1

Quilters already know this, and have been creating gorgeous quilts using these fabrics. The word toile comes to us from the French language, and means “cloth.” Typically toile fabrics have a white or light background with a repeating pastoral scene painted on them in one color. Of course, not all toiles have a light background with dark painting–some are just the  reverse–and some toiles are even three or more colors. Regardless, toile fabrics have been used for centuries to create beautiful home decor, and now other items, as well.

These are 100% cotton, ideal for quilting (they are not home dec weight):

Black and white toile
Black and purple on tan toile
Blue toile
Brown toile
Cream on burgundy toile

Timeless Treasures fabric - Taxi!

I don’t know if you saw page 54 of the Fall 2008 issue of Quilts & More magazine:

bwquilt_quiltsnmore

The quilt featured here uses the very striking Taxi fabric line from Timeless Treasures. The big, bold, oversized blocks in this quilt pattern are ideal for using large scale prints. The Taxi line has fabrics ideally suited for a pattern such as this one.

Timeless Treasures Taxi - Black with large circles
Timeless Treasures Taxi - Black floral
Timeless Treasures Taxi - Yellow floral
Timeless Treasures Taxi - Yellow print

Why not give it a try? Each finished block of this quilt has a mere 5 fabric pieces/cuts in it, measures 19″ square, and you only need twelve blocks. You can complete this quilt in no time. Let me know how yours turns out!

Batik quilt fabric is here!

batiks1

Guess what? I have been able to make some gorgeous batik quilt fabric available!

Quilters have been gravitating more and more towards 100% cotton batik fabrics. No wonder; they can be used to create absolutely stunning quilts. Timeless Treasures makes a beautiful line of batiks which they have called Tonga. You probably recognize the Timeless Treasures name, so you know that this is high end, quilt shop quality fabric. It is as soft and smooth as silk. There truly is something to be said about creating heirloom quilts with finer quality all-cotton fabric.

Timeless Treasures Tonga - Fig
Timeless Treasures Tonga - Bloom
Timeless Treasures Tonga - Pomegranate
Timeless Treasures Tonga - Rust
Timeless Treasures Tonga - Brown
Timeless Treasures Tonga - Plum
Timeless Treasures Tonga - Cream Multi
Timeless Treasures Tonga - Peach
Timeless Treasures Tonga - Aqua
Timeless Treasures Tonga - Pink multi

Happy quilting!
